Employment agencies match job candidates with open positions in client companies. A sales agent for an employment agency is responsible for generating business from the client companies. Sales agents can work inside the office making telephone calls to potential clients. They can also work outside the office, paying visits to clients in person. Some sales agents work a combination of inside and outside selling, depending on the particular agency requirements.

Identify Prospects

One of the most important job responsibilities is to identify prospects. Sales agents research newspapers and Internet sites (online business journals, associations, Chambers of Commerce) for information about companies and contact names. There are also resources that can be purchased such as lists of companies with names of executives and subscriber lists such as names of companies that subscribe to certain magazines. Sales agents also attend association meetings (sales, human resources) and networking functions (business breakfast, lunches, and after-hour activities).

Prepare Presentation Materials

Another important responsibility as a sales agent requires the preparation of a presentation (what the agency can do for the client) and marketing (information about the employment agency) materials. Sales agents take materials such as company brochures, software presentations (PowerPoint or Office Word), and articles about the advantages of using an employment agency with them on visits or send by mail if in the office. Sales agents may also be responsible for sales proposals (who, what, when, where and price for work) to present to potential clients.

Resolve Client Issues

Sales agents must maintain good relationships with their clients. This includes resolving any client issues whether with a candidate, problems with pricing, quantity and quality of work and honoring any agency guarantees. Outstanding customer service after the sale may be critical in obtaining future business. Good relationships also provide sales agents with the chance to uncover any intended employment needs and proactively pursue the business.

Recruit Quality Candidates

Some sales agents at employment agencies may be responsible for recruiting qualified candidates for the client's positions. In this case, the sales agent must screen the candidates carefully including background (criminal, education, job verification) checks and drug tests. Employment agencies may be held responsible if a candidate they recommend to the client is unprofessional or has performance (not skilled or able to do the job) or behavior issues (is late for work, refuses to take instruction, is a negative personality).

Conduct Quality Checks and Follow-up

Service after the sale can be the key to future business. Sales agents are responsible for conducting quality visits with the client to determine how the candidate is working. Some agencies give a client survey with certain questions about attendance, errors in the work, teamwork and overall performance. Sales agents may also be responsible for collections of invoices submitted to the client company. Good relations with the client can enhance the collection process that may be considered a delicate matter.
